“Your mess is someone else’s medicine.”
– Neeta Bhushan Nawalkha
In sharing her story of loss, divorce, cancer, entrepreneurship, and domestic violence, and in her new role of helping women step into their greatness through self-love no matter the adversity, best Selling Author, Forbes Contributor, Leadership Coach and International Speaker, Neeta Bhushan Nawalkha recently posted the following on Linkedin:
“TBT to when I was a dentist… just barely out of school.
I was called out a lot for the way I looked.
‘You’re too pretty to be a doctor.’
‘You’re too young to have your own practice.’
‘Are you the assistant?’
‘You look too young to be working.’
‘I thought I was seeing a male… is there a male dr. here?’
Checked all of the traditional boxes of SUCCESS as a brown, Asian, mixed female…
But all of these comments set me up for
Massive overachievement and crazy PERFECTION.
(I mean I worked in millimeters, there’s not much room to fail someone’s smile.)
And because they hurt, I was set off to prove my worth, my smarts, and most importantly
That my looks would NOT define me.
So I downplayed my personality. Tried dressing more ‘manly’ (is that a thing?). Afraid if people got to know the ‘REAL’ me, I wouldn’t be
And downright GOOD enough.
I ended up working so hard and my needing to PROVE set me up for burnout many times over.
But, YOU know BETTER, and now- 10 years later- being able to O W N my voice, and celebrating all aspects of me as a new mom, entrepreneur, wifey, business queen, quirky Chicago street girl, UNAPOLOGETIC and OWNING who she is.
Here’s YOUR permission to do the same.”
The courage to truly be yourself involves defining your most authentic self. In the myriad of roles you play on any given day: friend, lover, Mother, wife, partner, colleague, daughter, have the courage to remain faithful to what makes you unique. Never apologize or make excuses for being you. Go beyond the superficial lifestyles thrown upon you to decide whether you want more from this life, and have the courage to make changes where your inner voice screams, “Enough!”
Whether you choose new music on your ipod, a new pair of shoes, a new yoga class, or new friends, create a life that makes you smile…on the inside and on the outside.
