How to Prevent Embarrassing Winter Redness: Love your Skin a Little Better

“You’ve gotta dance like there’s nobody watching,
Love like you’ll never be hurt,
Sing like there’s nobody listening,
And live like it’s heaven on earth.”
― William W. Purkey

And once you’ve got all that good stuff going on, don’t forget to love your delicate skin just a little more during the harsh winter weather! The biting chill has arrived, and your skin may start to react with a growing flush of redness, inflammation and irritation if you happen to have sensitive skin. Have no fear, because by following a delicate, organic, mild skincare regime, you can effectively limit the redness, cracking and imperfections caused by the coldest temperatures. Organyc suggests the following winter beauty routine, but should you have any suggestions for other women navigating the same icy waters, we definitely welcome your comments!

Sensitive skin: how to maintain your healthy glow in winter

It is extremely important that you follow a daily skincare routine, especially in critical periods such as winter, when the cold puts a strain on the skin’s natural protective barriers.

  • Morning: In the morning, while you may tend to wash your face with warm or even cold water and with an alcohol-free liquid soap, be aware that excessive washing and aggressive detergents can dry the skin making it more sensitive. Prevention means decreasing the frequency of washing and using products that do not foam and wash like a common cleanser, but leave the skin soft. Reducing the use of water is recommended, especially in areas where it is very calcareous, and you may consider replacing your go-to cleanser with micellar water, which will enhance the hydrolipidic film and not over-dry your skin. Afterwards, lightly dab your skin with a soothing tonic based on cooling and emollient herbs such as calendula and chamomile. Finally, choose an excellent, fast absorption, moisturizing cream, enriched with vitamin E.
  • Afternoon: While performing your daily routines, choose foods that will benefit and reinforce your skin. Increase your consumption of foods rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, proven to help sensitive and stressed skin regenerate. It is important to drink a sufficient amount of water. Avoid foods that can cause irritation: alcohol, hot peppers and spices, some fruits with red pulp, smoked or pickled foods. Remember that alcohol taken on an empty stomach causes a greater flow of blood to the face. Another aspect to consider to reduce skin sensitivity, is the importance of keeping stress under control. Make going to the gym, participating in sports and relaxation techniques part of your daily routine.
  • Evening: Every evening, after cleansing your face, prepare a chamomile  infusion, let it cool and use it instead of your usual tonic, applying it with an Organyc 100% pure, organic cotton round. You can also make a compress to leave on your face for half an hour or more, using the rounds soaked in the chamomile infusion. Before going to sleep, it can be very useful to massage your face with jojoba or almond oil to soothe reddened skin.

In addition to caring for your skin from morning to evening, make sure you avoid the following: cosmetics and aggressive treatments that may cause irritation; soaps, scrubs, peels, and creams based on fruit acids and vitamin A, alcohol-based lotions and tonics, and excessively perfumed gels and creams.

Try an organic mask to improve sensitive and irritable skin!

Soothing Mango or Avocado Mask

Mango has strong anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties, and contains a large quantity of vitamins, enzymes and trace elements. The avocado is rich in vitamins and also in lipids that nourish the skin deeply, ensuring a soothing and emollient effect. To prepare this mask you need the pulp of half a mango or avocado, a teaspoon of olive oil, and a teaspoon of cornstarch. Mix the ingredients together and spread the mixture on your cleansed face and neck. Leave on for 15-25 minutes, then wash with warm water.

Making healthier lifestyle choices, incorporating an attentive skincare regime, and consciously choosing organic foods are ways to respect your body and protect your sensitive skin.
