“I didn’t get acne until after college, and I was very concerned, not only because I didn’t have the discipline to not pick at my face, but then that would lead to scarring and more acne – it’s a vicious cycle that can be broken!” –Hannah Bronfman
Jojoba oil is not a true oil, but a liquid wax obtained by cold pressing jojoba seeds.
An ancient beauty remedy, it has long been used for skin care. Unlike all other seed oils it does not contain glycerine and is easily absorbed by the skin without leaving a greasy residue. Often used in the treatment of acne, its consistency similar to sebum can “fool” the skin by rebalancing the production of sebum over time and reducing the risk of future acne outbreaks.
Properties of Jojoba Oil
Widely used in sebum-balancing serums, and rich in vitamin E and omega 3, jojoba is not actually an oil, but an ester of wax and although its chemical structure is similar to that of sebum, it does not clog pores. A non aggressive oil, jojoba oil gently penetrates pores and regulates the secretion of sebum from the epidermis which, if produced in excess, causes pimples and impurities to appear.
Once applied to the skin, jojoba oil “deceives” the skin into believing that it has produced enough sebum. In this way the production of sebum decreases and the problems related to acne are reduced. Over time, facial skin is less oily, but equally hydrated and protected.
The second major problem posed by acne is that of the spots and scars caused by the pimples, which are sometimes deep and difficult to attenuate. Thanks to its softening, regenerating, and healing properties, jojoba oil improves skin softness.
How Jojoba Oil Works
Jojoba oil, when used to treat acne, should be applied preferably in the evening. During the night, jojoba oil will have the opportunity to really penetrate skin. So, to apply it well, start by cleansing skin using delicate products, which do not further attack the skin. Once your epidermis is perfectly clean, pour half a teaspoon of jojoba oil onto the palm of your hand. Lightly tap the face to spread the product well, then proceed with circular massages, from the inside towards the outside of the face. Insist well on the most problematic areas like the T zone (forehead, nose and chin), and massage it until it is completely absorbed. Avoid rubbing too vigorously as it may further aggravate the inflammation caused by acne. Use a few drops at a time. Excessive use can cause your face to look shiny.
To make jojoba oil even more effective, you can combine it with an essential oil like lavender or geranium. For a 100% natural exfoliant, try mixing 4 tablespoons of jojoba oil, 4 tablespoons of powdered sugar and 20 ml of water, this works great for oily skin!
Since the initial action is the liberation of the pores, things might seem worse before they get better, but do not fear – good results are just around the corner! Note: before using jojoba oil for severe acne inflammation, please consult a Dermatologist. While natural remedies can be extremely effective, they may not be suitable for everyone.
