The Unsexy: Period Talk

A very good male friend once told me that the “unsexiest” thing a woman could do was to tell a man she had her period. The majority of men do not want to know when a woman is bleeding, they find it a major turnoff, and an even greater number of men have no idea what a woman on her period experiences. The burning question that many men ask is: “Do women become moodier when they have their period?”

The answer is NO. Make sure you are very careful about how you connect the emotional state of a woman to her reproductive system.

PMS 101

Not all women experience premenstrual syndrome, and each reacts to hormonal changes differently. If pms arrives, it arrives between the 14th day and the beginning of menstruation. It can last a few hours or two weeks, and 75 percent of women suffer at least for a period of their life. A severe form of PMS is premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), which affects two to eight percent of women.

The idea that women behave premenstrual during the cycle is wrong, and is due to the male fear of menstruation, and to the idea that women are biologically unstable.

There are many myths about girls and periods still in circulation today, due to the absence of education about periods within the schools. Back in the day, there was an unwritten social code that dictated that the first girl in the class to get her period was the coolest, and she set the bar for the rest of the girls in the class who suddenly felt “behind” something unknown. Plan International UK published the results of a survey of 1000 girls between the ages of 14 and 21: for at least half of the individuals surveyed, the menstrual cycle causes embarrassment. The association recommended that both genders receive lessons about menstruation at school.

We need to educate our boys to empower our girls, so that a woman’s sexuality loses some unnecessary taboos. To commemorate Menstrual Hygiene Day, Mozez Singh directed this video short entitled, “First Period” to highlight the multi pronged issues that are related to menstrual hygiene.
