Green is the New Black: Introducing Mater-Bi

Earth Day 2018

Inquiring women, concerned not only about the period care product ingredients that come into contact with their body’s sensitive skin, but the effects such products may have on the Earth, often send us requests for information about our Organyc products. We are always extremely happy to reply!

A common question is the following:

Do you use any plastics at all in your pads/tampons? What about the wrappers or packaging? Thank you 🙂

Please know that in addition to the products themselves, all Organyc outer packaging comes from renewable or recycled materials. Our outer wrap and backing for pads and liners are made from Mater-bi, which is created from corn starch. Organyc feminine care products are also biodegradable. Biodegradable, because they can be broken down into simpler substances by bacteria and microorganisms. Our own lab tests have proven the biodegradability of Organyc pads and tampons.

Mater-Bi

For those who are not familiar with Mater-Bi, it is a completely biodegradable and compostable bioplastic with which solutions and products with reduced environmental impact are realized for everyday life. These two properties allow a plastic material to be recovered through organic recycling of organic solid waste.

Mater-Bi is a modern material that is part of the bioplastic family composed of vegetable substances, such as cornstarch, and biodegradable polymers obtained from both raw materials of renewable origin and raw materials of fossil origin.

The added value of this material is that it is perfectly biodegradable and compostable in a period equal to a composting cycle: a minimum of 90% of the product in a maximum of 180 days.
Therefore, the environmental impact is reduced to a minimum.

Biodegradability

Biodegradability is the ability of organic substances and materials to be degraded into simpler substances through the (enzymatic) activity of microorganisms.
When the biological process is complete, there is a total transformation of the starting organic substances into simple inorganic molecules: water, carbon dioxide and methane.
Biodegradation is influenced by the chemical nature of the substance or material that is intended to biodegrade and the biodegradation environment. The composting and anaerobic digestion environments favor the high rates of industrially managed biodegradation.

Compostability

Compostability is the ability of an organic material to turn into compost through the composting process. Composting is an aerobic biological process (which occurs in the presence of oxygen), controlled by humans. It leads to the production of a mixture of human substances. The compost is an excellent fertilizer, as it is rich in humic substances and micro-organisms useful for the soil. Its contribution of organic substance improves the structure of the soil and the bioavailability of nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen compounds).

More than Organic, certified organic

There is no organic standard for feminine care, but since our products are made of a natural textile, they’ve been absorbed into the organic textile category. The leading organization for organic textiles is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards). In addition to being GOTS certified, Organyc products have also have the following certifications:

  • ICEA (The Ethical and Environmental Certification Institute) inspects and certifies firms respectful of the environment, workers’ dignity and collective rights. ICEA is one of the most prominent inspection and certification bodies in the field of sustainable development.
  • The SOIL ASSOCIATION promotes sustainable food and farming through the use of local, seasonal and organic systems and is the UK’s leading organic certifying organization.
  • Corman, the manufacturer of Organyc products, holds a certification in SA 8000 (Social Accountability Certification). SA8000 is a social accountability standard for decent working conditions, based on global workplace norms of the International Labor Organization (ILO), the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Organyc® products protect and respect sensitive skin

We are extremely proud that the following Organyc products have all earned Made Safe™ Certification: Moderate Flow Pads, Organyc Heavy Flow Pads, Organyc Panty Liners (Folded), and Organyc Panty Liners (Flat Packed)! We are currently working diligently to ensure that all of our products earn this fundamental certification. This certification signifies that they are literally made with safe ingredients not known or suspected to harm human health, animals, or ecosystems. It’s the first nontoxic certification to apply to products we use every day.

For the first time, you can find things that are safe to use on your body, with your families, and in your homes. Certified products are examined by scientists to ensure they’re made without known behavioral toxins, carcinogens, developmental toxins, endocrine disruptors, flame retardants, GMOs, heavy metals, neurotoxins, high-risk pesticides, reproductive toxins, toxic solvents, or harmful VOCs.
