With Spring just around the corner and softball, baseball, and lacrosse practice starting, whether you are coaching, playing or cheering from the bleachers, make sure you take precautions to protect your face from exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays. A frequent occurrence that can be quite unsettling is the sudden appearance of dark spots on your face. They are linked to an excess of skin pigmentation, the number one cause being exposure to UV rays. These skin discolorations are the signal that our epidermis no longer produces melanin as it should. The dark spots appear based on an excess of “blocked” melanin on the epidermis; there are several reasons why this blockage may occur.
When the skin is stimulated by the sun or solar lamps, melanin is produced for defensive purposes. But when there is a blockage during its production, spots on the face appear as the face is the most vulnerable area to direct sunlight. Keep in mind the following causes:
- Excessive and improper use of cosmetic products: make sure you carefully evaluate which oils, perfumes and creams to use. Use antioxidant cosmetics, containing vitamins and nutrients. Avoid aggressive facial treatments and use those suitable for your particular skin type, paying close attention to the ingredients inside, making sure that there are no oxidative substances or in any way harmful to the epidermis.
- Beware of vitamin and mineral deficiencies: Make sure you follow a balanced diet to ensure that toxins do not accumulate in the tissues. If the spots on the face have appeared due to a food imbalance, it is necessary to intervene by introducing foods rich in beta-carotene, vitamin A, zinc, selenium, vitamin C, etc. into daily food.
- A hormonal imbalance can alter both the absorption and production of melanin: in many cases, dark spots appear following the use of hormonal therapies, menopause or pregnancy.
A natural remedy for dark spots on your face
A natural remedy for dark spots is a face mask based on lemon and yogurt. Squeeze the juice of two fresh lemons in a 5 oz. jar of natural low-fat yogurt. Apply the mixture to the face for about 30, and then remove it with lukewarm water.
Be aware that dark spots on the face generally appear after the stimulation of melanin by UV rays. The first form of prevention is protection against sunlight. Make sure you purchase a cream with a suitable sunscreen. Those with particularly sensitive skin should always use it when they plan on spending long periods of time outdoors. When dealing with this problem, it is very important to seek the advice of a dermatologist so as to understand the causes and nip it in the bud.
