A phoenix is a mythical bird with a tail of beautiful gold and red plumage (or purple and blue, by some sources). It has a 600-800 year life-cycle, and near the end the phoenix builds itself a nest of cinnamon twigs that it then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again. The new phoenix is destined to live as long as its old self.
Some women have mastered the art of reinventing themselves. Whether they start with their lipstick, wardrobe, job, or gym, they manage to find a creative way to add spice to their image, their entire being.
I can barely make it out of bed, let alone make the grand clothing change of the day from pjs to sweats.
I know that the motivation to throw on a pair of skinny jeans will once again arise from the back of the closet, where they have been balled up and told to hibernate. Until that day arrives, leggings or sweats forever.
I have read blog after blog to try to find that spark that will drive me to find my inner college student struggling to explode out of this maternal being who craves pumpkin spice lattes 24-7, balances runny noses and explosive bowels with a single wipe, and whips up a mean pot roast with homemade garlic mashed potatoes (because garlic cures what ails you), all while handling the drama of a teenage girl dying to be popular. I mean, why can’t I just be satisfied with all of that? I’m freaking Wonder Woman squared.
In all of this chaos that is my life, I have been concentrating on trying to figure out my gift. After reading hundreds of blogs, I came to the realization that everyone has a gift. Nelson Mandela said, “It never hurts to see the good in someone. They often act the better because of it.”
Reading this quote, I found my special superpower.
I see the good in people.
When I meet a person who speaks for one hour about superficial things like cars, boats and restaurants, yet throws in a comment about how he cooks for his daughter instead of taking her to fast food, I concentrate on the fact that he wants his daughter to be healthy.
When a person cuts in front of me in line, instead of becoming angry, I ask the person if she’s in a hurry. When she turns to me, begs forgiveness, and says she needs to take her mom to the doctor, would I mind if she asks the teller a quick question? I say, yes.
When a little boy continuously calls out in class, because he strives for attention, I give him my piece of chalk and let him lead the class in correcting homework until he finds his comfort zone. The other students get it, they see and sense when a classmate is in difficulty, more than adults.
For many years, I suffered from sensitive skin. Momming it, teaching and being wife of the year stressed me to the point that my face and body suffered the consequences. I gained about 20 lbs, and my skin began having reactions to products that prior to having kids never seemed to affect me. Once upon a time I was the kind of woman that turned heads when I walked into an Athlete’s Foot; at a certain point, I realized I had become wallpaper. Totally unacceptable. Although my body had begun to betray me, my brain still functioned, so I started researching the ingredients in the products that came into close contact with my sensitive skin, starting with feminine care products.
I learned the importance of avoiding harmful chemicals that may provoke irritation, redness, or inflammation and began using Organyc® 100% pure, organic cotton feminine care products, guaranteed to protect and respect your sensitive skin:
