Beware of the Ingredients in the Pads and Tampons you Use: The South Korea Situation

“Since I began to use the Lilian pads early this year, my period has shortened from seven days to two days. At first, I never thought it could a problem stemming from sanitary pads. After I started to use organic cotton pads, the amount of menstrual blood increased. I was just so furious at the unconscientious company as well as the government.” – Choi

In March 2017, the Korean Women’s Environmental Network conducted a toxic test on five sanitary pads and five panty liners from five producers with Kim Man-goo, professor of environmental chemistry at Kangwon National University in Chuncheon, Gangwon, the results led health authorities to conduct an official investigation on all sanitary pads retailed in Korea.

While Klean Nara’s Lilian product is the center of the sanitary pad controversy, “Joeun Neukkim” (Yuhan-Kimberly), “Whisper” (P&G), and “Sofy” (LG Unicharm), were among those that the Korean Women’s Environmental Network, a civic group, claim are contaminated with volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. VOCs are substances that are naturally released from the product at room temperature, some of which can be harmful to the body.

Members of civic group Korean Women’s Environmental Network demand the government reinforce inspections on disposable sanitary pads.  Why are so many women suffering while the companies claim the products are safe?  This is a global phenomena.

A women’s health advocacy group, Korean Women’s Environmental Network, released a survey on 3,009 women who said they had experienced abnormal symptoms after using the Lilian pads. According to the survey, 65.6 percent of them said that their menstruation cycle changed. Nearly 86 percent said that the amount of menstrual blood diminished. Some 68 percent said that their menstrual pain worsened, while 55.8 percent said that their menstruation or vagina-related diseases got worse. Five percent of the women surveyed said their menstruation completely stopped.

Women must feel safe and secure when purchasing feminine care products that come into direct contact with their most intimate body parts.
